PA7 - Steven Miller & Talia Lerol

Paul Campos, Being Fat Is OK

At first glance, it is not obvious that any of the other writers in section thirteen of They Say I Say are arguing with Paul Campos. In the section, various writers argue who is to blame for the supposed obesity epidemic. John Banzhaf, a public interest lawyer, takes Congress to task for shirking their “responsibility to do something meaningful” about what he calls “America’s second most important and expensive preventable health problem.” Susie Orbach, a feminist professor, claims that being fat is a “social disease.” Confusingly, Orbach then wonders why women “respond” to social pressures by “getting fat.”

Campos neither argues that Congress has no responsibility to “do something” about “health problem” that is being fat, nor does he argue that women do not “get” fat because of social pressure. Rather, Campos takes an axe to the foundation of their arguments; the premise that being “overweight” is a problem to be solved.

Pointing to the New England Journal of Medicine, Campos notes that there is no solid data linking being overweight and death, in fact there is even some data “suggesting that weight loss increases mortality.” Hard evidence is required before labeling something a major “health problem” as Banzhaf does. Similarly, Campos points to data that shows, repeatedly, that dieting often leads to weight gain. As Campos says, overweight people can not simply chose to not be fat, and by the same token women do not “respond” to things by “getting fat.” Both Banzhaf and Orbach approach the subject from the vantage that being overweight is a problem to be solved, where as Campos argues that many people are just fat because that is who they are. Unfortunately for Banzhaf and Orbach, that leaves no one for them to blame.

  1. I thought that this blog was very informative. I like how your group finished up the blog by saying that these authors did not pin-point who was to blame about the obesity problem faced today. I also thought that is was very insightful to think about how dieting relates to death more than obesity does. Therefore, there is an even bigger problem, those who are genetically obese could put themselves at more risk of death is they try to lose the weight. This does not say that if one is slightly overweight they should not attempt to shed those extra pounds. I would also like to mention that being overweight does put those at risk for other heath problems that could cause death.

  2. You covered Campos points very well. We were only supposed to write an 8-10 sentence parapraph, but the way that you wrote eveything floowed very well. I agree that "being fat" is a "problem" to be solved, BUT the only person to blame is the person that is "fat." Nicely written, covered the points of view very well.

  3. You really laid your response out great. You've illustrated the different sides of the forum and then shown how Campos' opinion is right in the middle of the two. I've never thought to think that someone's size is just another thing that makes them who they are, just as if someone's eyes were blue. You closed out perfectly with the last sentence, it gave the effect of Campos's point of view being superior to all the others with no questions asked. Good job!

  5. The format of your essay was very good and I think your transition from one author to another, was good. It kept me interested in the essay. Maybe give more examples between the author you chose to disagree with. The information that you did provide was interesting and thought provoking. I think you were headed in the right direction with this essay.

  6. I also agree that being overweight is a problem. It was good that you had some sort of source to point back to that backs up what the author’s point of view is. Your essay had a smooth flow to it and it was understandable. It was interesting to know that, “Campos points to data that shows, repeatedly, that dieting often leads to weight gain.” I thought your conclusion wrapped up your thoughts as well as the author’s pretty well. Good job on the essay.
